Heat's On
Heat's On event is organized by Local Steamfitters Union 601 with homeowner referrals by Project Home and Energy Services, Inc.
Saturday, October 23rd will be the 24th annual “Heat's On” program in the Madison area. The Steamfitters Union members volunteer to provide furnace checks for lower-income homeowners in the Madison area. All of the labor and materials for these furnace checks are provided by professional steamfitters at no cost to the homeowners. Fifty lower-income homeowners received furnace service in 2009.
Qualified homeowners are referred to the Union by Project Home and Energy Services based on the following:
- Own and occupy a single-family home assessed at or below $233,000 (mobile homes are not eligible.)
- Homeowners must be on Energy Assistance through Energy Services, Inc. Call them if you have not applied for assistance yet.
- Homeowners are eligible to receive this service every other year.
- Homes must have natural gas furnaces, not propane or oil heat (new requirement in 2009).
- Household income for all wage earners must be at or below 60% of State Median Income. See chart below.

The sponsors for this event are: The Area Parts Houses that donates the necessary replacement parts used for the repairs on the heating systems; Research Products that donates carbon monoxide detectors for each scheduled home; Rayovac Company/Spectrum Brands that donates flashlights and replacement batteries for the smoke detectors in the homes. The Madison Area Contractors donates the use of their trucks and tools needed to perform the work at the homes. And the most important contributor is the Steamfitters from Local 601 that provides the professionals who conduct the work.
