Paint-a-thon

Project Home's 23rd Annual Paint-a-thon
began July 30 and will end September 24!

Here are some amazing outcomes from the 2011 program.
First house is in Deerfield.  Can hardly tell it is the same house.

We have restructured Paint-a-thon over th e winter to help  us  meet the urgent needs of low-income homeowners who have received citations from their municipalities due to paint complaints. The local building inspectors determine if the complaints are warranted.  Homeowners then receive fines and may have to go to court.

Project Home is working with area inspectors to match more professional painters and some community volunteers to help these homeowners with this difficult and expensive problem. These houses typically take more prep time, skill and a few couple days than Paint-a-thon houses in the past.

We have several wonderful companies and community groups who have volunteered to paint these homes and donate paint to help low-income homeowners with significant painting needs.  Painters Union members in top photo, and Mad Rollin' Dolls Roller Derby team helping.  These two groups teamed again in 2011.

The 22nd Annual Paint-a-thon on Saturday, August 14, 2010 was a great day!

We painted the homes of 15 homeowners in Dane County with 220 volunteers.  The weather turned out just fine with very few mosquitoes!

Of the 15, 4 houses (not shown) were cited by the City of Madison as a result of complaints.  Professional painting companies, Badger Painting and Genesis Painting volunteered to paint these difficult homes. The recipients were delighted and relieved that the fines and stress of needing to paint were over.

Pictured is Marv a homeowner in Deerfield near the end of the day and happy with the church volunteers' efforts.

In 2010, we painted 17 homes for Paint-a-thon with the help of 320 volunteers and the generous paint donation by Hallman Lindsay which donates nearly 200 gallons each year! Families, friends, church and civic groups all pitched in to help out elderly neighbors and people with disabilities whose homes needed protection from the elements.

Volunteers power washed, scraped and painted the homes in a variety of Dane County communities.  Since 1989 the Paint-a-thon   has washed, scraped and painted 480 homes and have improved the homes of the owners in 27 Dane County communities.

There were approximately 220 volunteers of all skill levels, many of whom return year after year, and three professional painting companies that head up some of the houses. Companies, social service organizations, churches, and families have a great time and enjoy helping a neighbor in need.

A big thanks goes out to Hallman-Lindsay and Sherwin Williams that generously donates all the paint each year, that's 200 gallons give or take a few. Also, we are fortunate to have Jeremy Kruk, owner of Badger Painting, and Certa Pro Painters, and Eric Welch Painting for 2011.

"I am proud to own my own home and daycare even though maintenance is a struggle for me. I am so appreciative of the fantastic paint job my home received and just want to say, thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget how fortunate I was to be a part of the 2008 Dane County Paint-a-thon."  Ruth Lapp

Ruth's daycare kids wrote on the sign below, "Thank you for painting our daycare."
